The skills we all need

Being a computer teacher and a researcher in computers, I have never thought of a day when I didn’t encounter a computer in some respect. I do completely understand the purpose of traditional learning because it turned everyone into the person they are today. However in Kang Chiao, we have a committed team of administrators and teachers to bring the world to the students, But in the computer department, we bring the future to the students. Our curriculum does not only focus on exams or passing theoretical information to students, but we emphasize training students to attain skills for the future. Our class tasks are based on team building and working in teams, this encourages confidence in our class. Since young learners like competing as it’s part of their nature, we design our classes so that they have to compete while doing tasks which in turn gives them an edge because during the course of these tasks, new leaders are discovered and each team usually works hard to outcompete the other. So, laying down the right strategy is needed along the way. And all this is left to the students to figure out. Those that lay the best strategy, they win the challenges. But the other teams get to copy the same strategies or even invent better strategies. Just like in software development groups or teams, we try to pass the same attitude to the students.

When it comes to programming, many people start learning how to program at university or some can never learn about it, but the approach at university level is very complex for the students. The reason for that is, no one initiated them into this absolutely new world. But they are learning how to solve new world problems. That’s why we decided to gamify most of our topics. Sometimes you can pass by our class and you can see us really excited, that excitement comes from two places, the first being the joy the students get while playing the games. And how the game explains the particular problem or solution that seemed complex at first. So this interconnection is a powerful tool we apply to make things easy for them and for them to understand programming at a basic level. Because the games are designed to train them to solve problems. Which is exactly what programming is all about. In our Cbot programming class, we allowed the students to figure out the basic concepts of programming. We as teachers realized that from the games we had played before, almost 90% of the students were able to figure out at least a 10 commands in programming. And this assured us that the foundation was laid well.

What we still remain committed to passing as many skills as we can to the students with fun and encouragement and allow them to be as creative as they can. My ultimate goal as a teacher is to make the students love the hardest part of a subject and make it so simple for them to understand where sometimes they get well acquainted with a certain topic such that they can teach others or somewhere when they encounter the same problem that requires the same skills, they know how to apply those skills. We always stay committed not only teach the students but train them in what is considered the 21st century industry. And when they start at a young age to get their hands on such skills, they are on the way to conquer the future.
